How to Get Here

 

Culebra would not be the hidden paradise it is if it wasn't a little tricky getting here. With help from us here at Mamacitas, we will help get you here without a hitch in your vacation plans. It will make it easier if we break down travelers depending on their travel plans. Based on our experience and that of our guests, we hope our recommendations will ensure you get the most out of your Culebra experience.

 

Travelers arriving to SJU (San Juan International) intending to stay the duration of their trip in Culebra:

 

  • We recommend connecting flights at SJU through one of the local airlines to Culebra airport (CPX). They have booths right at the airport and you check in after retrieving your luggage. This is hassle free travel to Culebra. Prices vary depending on the airline but normally average a little over $100 round trip. Most people do not realize that a taxi to Fajardo will cost about the same, if not more, and not to mention the flight from SJU to Culebra is no more than 30 minutes. Below are contact numbers for the local airlines and they can help you with getting to Culebra quick and easy.
  • Travelers with connecting flights through SJU sister airport at Isla Grande can take a Taxi between airports and connect through to Culebra. Not all Culebra airlines offer direct flights from SJU, so you'll have to taxi over to Isla Grande, located 10 minutes away to reach your flight. Taxis usually charge between $10 and $15 fare and the flight from Isla Grande to Culebra is about 30 minutes. This is one of the more convenient ways to arrive to Culebra.
  • Travelers arriving at SJU can also fly to Josè Aponte de la Torre Airport (RVR) in Ceiba, which is the closest airport on mainland Puerto Rico to Culebra. From RVR, you can take a 10 minute taxi to the Ferry Terminal in Fajardo which will cost between $10 and $15. The flight from San Juan to Cieba is around 20 minutes.
  • Taxi Service is available from the international airport which can take you to the ferry terminal in Fajardo where you can take the passenger ferry. Rates vary and can range from $40 to $80. Once in Fajardo, which is about a 45 minute drive from the airport, coordinate ferry times to ensure you arrive in time for the last ferry to Culebra; which leaves at 7 p.m. The ferry costs $2.25 each way and has 2 to 3 trips daily. Ideally, you should leave the airport no later than 4:30 p.m. in order to make the ferry to Culebra.
  • Renting a car at the aiport and then driving to Fajardo and the ferry terminal. Although this option is feasible, it requires a good amount of planning. You can leave your rental car in one of the secure parking lots at the ferry terminal in Fajardo which charge $5 per day. The ferry rates are $2.25 per person each way. If you plan to try and take your vehicle on the cargo ferry, this will take a good deal of planning due to the limited space on cargo Ferries. We recommend calling ahead to the ferry terminal service and getting a roundtrip reservation with a confirmation number. They can be reached by calling (787) 863-0705.

Travelers originating or vacationing in Puerto Rico and visiting Culebra island:

 

  • You can fly from any one of the local connecting airports located in San Juan and Cieba. The 30 minute flight from San Juan costs between $30 and $50 dollars and the 15 minute flight from Cieba around $30. These will get you on the beach and enjoying Culebra in the quickest time possible and practically hassle free.
  • Taxi service or driving from your location in Puerto Rico to the ferry terminal in Fajardo where you'll catch the ferry to Culebra. The ferry will cost $2.25 per person and leaves three times daily. Secure parking located close to the ferry terminal costs $5 a day.   • The Ferryboat is commonly called La Lancha in Spanish and is normally a one and one-half hour ocean voyage)
  • Embarcadero is the Spanish term for the ferry terminal.
  • Airfare between San Juan and Culebra is $50 to $75
  • Airfare between San Juan and Cieba is $25 to $30
  • Airfare between Isla de Culebra and Cieba is $25 to $30.
  • Taxi between Cieba airport and the Embarcadero is $10 to $15.
  • The Ferry service costs $2.25 per adult passenger.
  • For Ferry schedules, Call 787-863-0705 (Fajardo) or 787-742-3161 (Culebra)
  • Be sure to call and check the day's Ferry schedule.
  • Depending on the particular day, there are usually 2 or 3 Ferry trips each day. You should try to buy tickets one hour before the Ferry's scheduled departure. There are no reservations or advanced sales.
  • The taxi fare from San Juan to Fajardo is negotiated with the individual drivers usually $50.00 to $75.00.
  • Puerto Rico is a Free State Associated with the United States. U.S. currency, no passport or visa required from USA.
  • The local language is Spanglish, a charming combination of Spanish and English. Ask for a driver who negotiates in English, one is always available.
  • You can rent an AVIS car at San Juan International and return it to AVIS at El Conquistador Hotel near Fajardo.
  • Taxi from El Conquistador to Cieba airport or Embarcadero is $15.00 plus tip.
  • If you arrive in Culebra via ferry, you are within walking distance to our facilities. Average person can make the walk in less than 5 minutes.
  • If you are arriving by plane to Culebra Airport (CPX) you can take a publico or taxi to Mamacitas. The commute is no more than 5 minutes and taxis normally charge $3 to $5. Their contact numbers is (787) 742-3537.
  • Car rentals can be arranged at the Culebra Airport. Carlos Jeep Rental can be contacted at (787) 742-3514 or www.carlosjeeprental.com
  • Driving directions and maps from San Juan International Airport to the ferry terminal can be found on Mapquest at www.mapquest.com. While doing your search, enter SJU or San Juan International Airport as your starting location and Ferry terminal in Fajardo, PR as your final destination. Other locations may be available as the site is frequently updated.
  • Once in Culebra finding Mamacitas is relatively easy. We are located in the town of Dewey. Culebra is small and friendly and you should have no problem finding our hotel. Don't be afraid to ask for help, residents of Culebra are friendly and outgoing always willing to help.

Remember, if Culebra were easy to get to it wouldn't be the virgin paradise it is. With the proper planning and a little patience, you will arrive in Culebra hassle free.
